This plant is a small shrub or climbing woody vine that thrives in various parts of India at low elevations, typically growing in shaded areas and tropical climates. Its root system consists of clustered tuberous roots. The stems are angular, while the leaves have been reduced to sharp, scale-like structures approximately 0.4-0.6 mm long. White flowers appear singly or in clusters on a raceme. The fruit is a rounded berry with 1-6 smooth black seeds.

After harvesting, the root is dried and can be processed by boiling, peeling, and cutting into pieces. It contains a high amount of mucilage, which forms lumps when powdered due to moisture absorption. Two varieties are commonly traded: a pale brown, slightly resinous root from Nepal and a dirty white, spongy one likely from south India. Ayurvedic practitioners prefer the Nepalese variety for its purported effectiveness. The Nepalese root is less widely available in commercial markets, whereas the Indian variety has gained popularity worldwide.

How to use:

To prepare a decoction, combine 1 tablespoon of dried herbs with 1 cup of water in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 30-60 minutes. Strain the liquid and press out as much extract as possible before serving.

Tips:

  • Herbal decoctions can be sweetened using honey, natural fruit juices, stevia leaf powder, or licorice root powder.
