Bitter orange (Citrus aurantium)The Bitter Orange tree is an evergreen species that grows to 9-10 meters in height and 5-6 meters wide. Its bark is smooth and greyish-brown, with branches forming a regular hemisphere. Oval-shaped leaves are alternate, evergreen, glossy, and dark green on top, becoming paler below. They typically range from 3-5 inches long and may have a spine at the base of the leaf. The Bitter Orange tree closely resembles the Edible Orange tree, but can be distinguished by its wider leaf stalks, which are heart-shaped in comparison to the narrower stalks of the Edible Orange tree.Bitter orange (Citrus aurantium)This citrus fruit bears a strong resemblance to the sweet orange.Oranges (Citrus sinensis) are a type of citrus fruit. The fruit has a diameter of 7-8 centimeters, making it smaller than expected. Its skin is thicker and more textured than an orange's, with deeper dimples. The pulp tastes sour, while the peel and surrounding rind have a strong bitter flavor. In contrast to sweet oranges, this fruit's flowers are highly fragrant, emitting a potent scent from their five-petaled white blooms. These hermaphroditic flowers contain both male and female organs and rely on apomictic insects for pollination. The plant is self-fertile. The fragrance of orange blossoms can be distinguished from neroli by its sweeter, warmer, and more floral notes. This difference stems from the distinct extraction methods used to obtain their essential oils: neroli through steam distillation, and orange blossom via enfleurage.

Bitter oranges are used for their essential oil and can be found in perfumes, flavorings, or as solvents. The Seville orange is particularly valued for making marmalade. While sweet oranges are a staple at fruit stalls everywhere, few people know that they originated from the bitter orange variety. In fact, sweet oranges were imported to Italy from China as early as the 11th century, while their sweeter counterparts didn't arrive in Europe until the 15th century.

How to use:

Hot Infusion:

To prepare dried herbs and flowers, combine 2-3 tablespoons of the dried material in a cup or teapot. Pour hot water over it, then cover and let steep for 10-30 minutes. This process releases the active compounds, including antioxidants, enzymes, vitamins, flavonoids, and volatile oils from the botanicals. Strain and press out as much liquid as possible before serving.

Tips:

  • Herbal teas can be sweetened using alternatives such as honey, natural fruit juice, stevia leaf powder, or licorice root powder.
  • Freeze tea in ice trays to create ice cubes or use pop molds to make frozen tea pops.

Precautions:

Before using this herbal product, it's essential to consult a qualified healthcare professional, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
