This plant has a tall, slender habit similar to the Cotton Thistle, with deeply lobed leaves that have wavy margins and spiny tips. The leaves are a deep green colour with white veins and can often be found growing in hedge banks, waste ground, and areas around buildings, leading some experts to question its native status. It is relatively rare in Scotland.
The heads of this thistle were formerly edible, often boiled like artichoke heads. According to tradition, the white veins on its leaves are said to have originated from the Virgin's milk that once fell upon a plant, earning it the name Our Lady's Thistle and reflecting the Latin species name. The Marian or Milk Thistle is considered one of the most significant medicinal members of this genus.
