This plant has a tall, slender appearance similar to the Cotton Thistle, with deeply cut leaves and wavy margins that are spiny at the edges. The leaves have a deep green colour with white veins and can often be found growing in hedgebanks, waste ground, and areas around buildings. Its presence in these locations has led some experts to question whether it is truly native. In Scotland, it is relatively rare.
The flowers of this thistle were once edible, similar to artichoke heads. According to tradition, the white veins on its leaves are said to have originated from a drop of the Virgin's milk that fell upon it, earning it the name Our Lady's Thistle. The Latin name for this species also reflects this origin story. This plant is considered one of the most valuable medicinal members of its genus, known as Marian or Milk Thistle.
How to use:
Hot Infusion:
To prepare dried herbs or flowers, add 2-3 tablespoons of the dried material to a cup or teapot. Pour in hot water, then cover with a lid for 10-30 minutes. This process helps extract antioxidants, enzymes, vitamins, flavonoids, and volatile oils from the botanicals. Strain and press out as much liquid as possible before serving.
Tips:
- Herbal teas can be sweetened using honey, natural fruit juices, stevia leaf powder, or licorice root powder.
- Freeze tea in ice trays or pop molds to create ice cubes or pops.
Precautions:
Before using this herbal product, it is recommended that you speak with a qualified healthcare professional, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
