This perennial herb has erect stems that grow 60-120 cm tall. Its leaves are alternate, ovate to slightly heart-shaped, and velvety with a dense covering of stellate hairs. They can be up to 11 inches wide and 3 inches long, with entire or 3-5 lobed margins. The flowers are pale pink and similar in shape to those of the common Mallow, but smaller and less showy. They appear in axillary clusters or panicles, typically from August to September. The stamens form a tube, with kidney-shaped anthers that have a single cell. After flowering, the plant produces flat, round fruits called "cheeses", which are typical of this order of plants.

The roots used are from cultivated plants at least 2 years old and harvested in autumn. According to the Council of Europe, marshmallow is considered a natural food flavoring substance. This classification allows it to be added to food products in small amounts, with some potential restrictions on its active ingredients. Historically, marshmallow has been approved for use in foods in the United States.

How to use:

Hot Infusion:

To prepare dried herbs or flowers, place 2-3 tablespoons in a cup or teapot and pour hot water over them. Cover the container for 10-30 minutes to allow the water to extract the beneficial compounds, including antioxidants, enzymes, vitamins, flavonoids, and volatile oils. Strain and press out as much liquid as possible before serving.

Tips:

  • Herbal teas can be sweetened using honey, natural fruit juices, stevia leaf powder, or licorice root powder.
  • Freeze tea in ice trays or pop molds to create ice cubes or homemade pops.

Precautions:

Before using this herbal product, it is recommended that you consult with a qualified healthcare professional, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
