Citrus limonThis plant is a small evergreen tree or bush that typically grows 9-12 feet tall, but can reach up to 20 feet. It has irregularly shaped and thorny branches with bark that varies in color from grey on the trunk to green on younger stems and purplish on twigs. The leaves are ovate-oval, about two inches long, with serrated edges and sharp spines at the base of the stalks. They start out reddish when young, turning dark green above and light green below as they mature. The leaves can be oblong, elliptic, or long-ovate in shape, measuring 2-4 inches long, and have fine teeth along their edges. The plant produces mildly fragrant flowers that grow singly or in clusters of up to three in the leaf axils. These flowers have four or five petals, are white on top and purplish underneath, and measure about two centimeters long. The stems bearing these flowers are reddish when they first appear. The fruit is a bright yellow, ovoid berry that grows up to three inches long. It has a nipple-shaped end and is smooth except for indentations over the oil glands. The pulp inside is pale yellow and acidic.
There are approximately 47 cultivated varieties of lemons. The Eureka variety produces fruit continuously throughout the year, making it a common choice for supermarkets. It's also known as the "Four Seasons" lemon due to its unique ability to bear both fruit and flowers simultaneously.
The limon cortex, the white interior of the lemon peel, has a variable thickness and spongy texture. The outer layer, known as the flavedo, is yellow and emits a fragrant aroma with a bitter taste. Lemon peel can be used fresh or preserved through drying, candying, or pickling. The essential oil extracted from the peel contributes significantly to flavor profiles. The lemon tree's fruit, an ellipsoidal yellow sphere, serves multiple purposes globally, primarily for its juice. This juice has dual applications: culinary and non-culinary uses. In domestic settings, lemon juice is valued as a stain remover, while a salt-coated slice can be used to clean copper-bottomed pots. Lemon peel oil finds widespread use in various products, including furniture polishes, detergents, soaps, shampoos, perfume blends, and colognes.
Limes and lemons belong to the same citrus fruit family and share similar nutritional profiles, but they differ in appearance: limes are green and smaller, while lemons are yellow and larger.
How to use:
Powdered Herb:
Powdered herbs can be used in a variety of applications.
You can add powdered herb to various food preparations such as smoothies, sauces, spreads, and baked goods like cookies. For children, mix the powder with honey or glycerin to create a paste. The thicker the paste, the stronger its herbal flavor will be. This method, known as "Electuaries", makes it easier for kids to take medicine due to the sweetness of the added ingredients.
Making your own herbal capsules at home ensures that they contain only pure, unadulterated herb, free from fillers or additives. They can be easily dissolved in a liquid for consumption.
Herbal poultice: A mixture of herbal powder and liquid, typically water, creates a paste that can be applied directly to the skin, providing relief from various skin conditions.
Mix powdered herbs with water, fruit juice, or another liquid to create a concentrated herbal drink.
