English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is a popular variety of lavender known for its calming properties. It has been used in traditional medicine for centuries to soothe and relax the mind and body. Our English Lavender essential oil is extracted from the flowers of this plant, which are rich in linalool and linalyl acetate - compounds that contribute to its therapeutic benefits. This shrub has a sprawling habit, growing 2-6 feet tall and 1-3 feet wide. It produces attractive purplish-blue flower spikes on long stems that are grey-brown to dark brown in color. The bark peels longitudinally. The leaves are evergreen, measuring 1-6 cm long and 3-5 mm wide, with a short petiole. They are linear-lanceolate to linear in shape and are found in clusters on the shorter leafy shoots. The flowers are pinkish-purple and grow in spikes that can be up to 10 cm long. These spikes are produced at the top of slender stems, each bearing 6-10 flowers with the upper ones tightly packed together. The stem supporting the spike is typically three times longer than the spike itself.
True lavender originates from the western Mediterranean region and has been used by people for at least 3000 years. Various species have been utilized since ancient times for their aromatic and medicinal properties. The fragrance of lavender can vary significantly depending on its growing conditions and type. For example, a wild shrub in southern France will have a distinct scent compared to the flowers in your garden. Lavender essential oil, when diluted with a carrier oil, is often used as a relaxant in massage therapy. While it's well-known that consuming certain substances can impact our health and mood, lavender demonstrates how simply smelling something can have a profound effect on our emotions by reducing anxiety, pain, and promoting sleep. Lavender has been prized for its calming scent for centuries and was commonly used in bathing and laundry practices throughout northern Europe. It is also sometimes paired with cheeses made from sheep or goat's milk. The flowers are occasionally used as a garnish in confectionery, particularly on cakes, and complement chocolate well.
When using lavender essential oil, exercise caution due to its potent properties, both for external and internal applications.
